Liberal Democrats Claim Laurels as Lead Remain Party in Hastings & Rye

Local Liberal Democrats joyfully took to social media on Sunday evening as the results for the European elections came in. Neck and neck with the Green Party in the Hastings only counting area, the Lib Dems won a clear second place in Rother District - four of whose wards are included in the Hastings & Rye parliamentary seat.

Vince Cable is Standing Down as Liberal Democrat Leader

Able Cable As previously announced, Vince Cable is standing down as Liberal Democrat leader, ending his time on an unexpected high. Not only brilliant local election results but also - if the polls are right - with the Liberal Democrats outpolling the Conservatives in a national election for the first time since 1906 (insert joke about how that is before even Vince was born). Perhaps even also outpolling Labour.

Safari Supper Saturday: 8th June 2019 at 7pm

You are warmly invited to Hasting and Rye Liberal Democrats' Safari Supper. And we have a reason to celebrate... in the words of Vince Cable "British liberals beat both the Conservatives and the Labour Party for the first time since the days of Lloyd George. We secured second place in a national election, our largest ever group of MEPs, and our best share of the vote in a decade."

TOXIC CONSERVATIVE LEGACY PUNISHES THE MOST VULNERABLE

East Sussex County Council led by the Conservatives is poised to make £55 million worth of cuts which will hit the most vulnerable residents.

East Sussex County Council led by the Conservatives is poised to make £55 million worth of cuts which will hit the most vulnerable residents. Further cuts are expected later in the year as the budget process continues. Cllr David Tutt, Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition group explains:

“The legacy of the last 14 years of Conservative government is a public sector that has been starved of funds. Locally, the Conservatives had said that they would maintain a core offer of statutory services but these budget proposals for 2025/2026 show that they can’t even do that.

The situation for our most vulnerable residents is frankly appalling and as a group of Liberal Democrat councillors, we will do all we can to oppose these cuts. We will look at every aspect of the budget to try to find alternatives.

The last hope for local government is a rescue package from the Labour government and we are calling on them to provide at least some temporary funding to enable us to protect older people, children with special educational needs and those in need of preventative care.

This is now an opportunity for the Labour government to show that they are different to Conservatives who continually put self-interest and profit before caring for communities and public service.”
