AIR POLLUTION SURVEY
As a local GP before his retirement, Emlyn Jones (pictured here) is well aware of the number of people with respiratory illnesses in the area. Local councils have a duty to monitor air pollution, but their ability to do so has been severely restricted by Tory spending cuts, which have particularly hit local authorities. Together with his colleagues Susan Stoodley and Stewart Rayment, Emlyn thought it would be good to try to get an idea of how people see airborne pollutants in your locality as potentially affecting their health and wellbeing.
It is known that gases such as nitrogen and sulphur oxides and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5 size) from traffic exhaust, dust, smoke can aggravate existing heart chest and brain disease. They can also be factors in producing these conditions, as well as impacting mental health from road noise for example. Statistics for these conditions are raised locally.
We are focusing on Battle Road, Bohemia Road, London Road and Sedlescombe Road, north & south, around the major junctions, and their immediate area. We are concerned that there are the Christ Church & Silverdale Primary Schools in the area.
